Take It Off When Needed

Caring for your ring means occasionally taking it off. This includes times during rigorous sports activities. Holding a tennis racket or lifting weights is particularity not good for an engagement ring or wedding band that has stones going all the way around the finger. You wouldn’t want a 15-pound dumbbell banding into your diamonds, even with gloves on. You’d also want to take your engagement ring off during gardening. It is always possible to chip your diamond or knock it looks while doing heavy lifting your yardwork. Finally, take your ring off anytime you are deep cleaning your house. Harsh chemicals such as soaps, cleansers and oils can damage the ring. It’s also not a good idea to wear your ring white doing the dishes. We’ve seen more than one ring go down the running garbage disposal.

Keep it Safe

While the ring is off, make sure you have a safe, and memorable place to put your ring. Diamond rings should be stored in their own separate location, pouch or compartment. Diamonds are the hardest gem and can often scratch other softer gemstones then they are placed together on one area. By placing it in same location every time, it never gets lost.

No Lotions, Sunscreens or Perfume

These products create a film on your diamond and metal, creating a magnet for dirt, sand and particles to collect on the stone. These particles then rub against the stone and metal and can scratch colored gemstones and metal. It’s a good idea to take your ring off before you put these things on. And, just in general, these products will create a film on your diamond and cause it to sparkle less.

Check Setting Annually

Even the most secure diamond settings may loosen over time, particularly if the ring worn daily. It is important to have your diamond engagement ring checked for any daily wear maintenance issues that could make the setting of your diamond less secure. Shapiro Diamonds recommends you have your diamond and setting checked every nine months to 1 year to make sure the stone hasn’t been knocked loose or the prongs are not lifting, especially if the diamond is over 1.50 carats.

Don’t Swim In Your Ring

Cold water in the ocean and swimming pools may shrink your fingers just enough to loosen the ring from your finger, causing it to call off. If you lose it in the deep blue sea, you won’t ever it again. We’ve had more than one customer return right after the honeymoon for another ring purchase! While platinum can withstand almost any chemical, we advise not to expose white, yellow or rose gold rings to the harsh chemicals in swimming pools and spas. Gold can become discolored over time.

Clean It

Shapiro Diamonds will clean your ring free of charge, just give us a call and let us know you are swinging by. If you don’t have time to get to showroom, there are a few ways to clean your ring at home.
We recommend picking up any bottle of jewelry cleaner at any major retailer like CVS, Target, Walmart, etc. They are all good and very similar. Simply scrub the top and bottom of the diamond with a soft toothbrush and rinse several times in hot water.

For an extra dirty ring, or if you are looking for extra shine, soak your diamond ring in the cleaner for 15 minutes. Make sure to rinse the ring in warm water several times to be sure to get all of the solution off.
You may set the ring on a soft towel to dry, or gently pat it dry.

Insure Your Ring

Your ring is irreplaceable. However, it’s important to have insurance just in case. We advise insuring your ring separate from your homeowner’s insurance policy.

We recommend “Perfect Circle Insurance” by Jeweler’s Mutual. They are wonderful to work with in the event of loss or theft. They make the replacement process very quick and easy for their clients.

By following this Diamond Ring Care guide, your engagement ring is sure to be as beautiful and dazzlingly as it was on the day he proposed.
