The Four Cs of Diamonds: Carat

“Carat” refers to the weight of a diamond. Carat is often confused with size even though it is actually a measure of weight. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. One carat can also be divided into 100 “points.” A .75 carat diamond is the same as a 75-points or 3/4 carat diamond.

Do not buy into the belief that the larger the carat weight, the more valuable the diamond. While this can be true, it is not necessarily so. Keep in mind that wholesale diamond dealers take into account a stone’s color, clarity, and cut, as well as carat weight when pricing a diamond as well as other factors.

It is important for every potential diamond buyer to prioritize each of the aforementioned characteristics when considering a stone. Remember that choosing a diamond is not an exact science.

The chart below reflects the millimeter size of diamonds relative to their carat weight. Use this chart as a relative guide only since actual sizes will vary with different monitor settings.

When selecting the best carat weight, take into consideration her taste and style, her finger size, the type of band or setting, and your budget.
